The festival of lights is here! I love diwali..! Lightings everywhere, sweets to eat, visiting relatives and having fun with cousins! It is a bright jolly happy festival!
Diwali is celebrated almost all around India. According to the hindu epic Ramayana, diwali is considered as the day when Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya with his wife, Sita after defeating the demon king Ravan. The people of his kingdom celebrated their return by lighting diya's , bursting crackers and decorating their houses with rangoli.
This time we were going to help the children of Sule High School to paint and decorate diya's. We brought the diya's, paints and the decorating material. The children were very excited to decorate the diya's. We had planned the process before we started doing our work. We decided to paint all the diyas of all the children first and then start with the decoration. We divided children into 2 groups. One group I was managing and second group was managed by Meghan. We handed each child one diya, and asked them to form 2 lines. At the end of one line I stood and at the end of second line Meghan stood. Each kid came forward and we helped them paint the diya with a sponge. After everybody was done painting the diya's, we took out the decorating material. We got them various colored sequins. We laid down all the sequins infront of them and gave them glue so that they could stick it on the diya's. It was nice seeing them using their creativity. All the diyas looked so beautiful! Creative, beautiful and colorful would be the right adjectives to describe the diya's! By the end of the session, our hands were stained of paint, glue and sequins! But it was worth it.
It is always nice to be around creativity and imagination. And giving the little angels the opportunity to express their creativity and imagination made me very happy. And while helping them, even I got to learn new techniques of decorating and i got in touch with my creative side. I would love to see them using their creativity more often.
